Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M Karunanidhi on Monday said his party will get a majority of its own in the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls and there will not be any need for a coalition government.

After casting his vote along with his family members in a booth in Thousand Lights constituency, he told reporters: "As per present indications, the DMK will form a government of its own and there is no need for a coalition government in the state."

He said he expected the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance to win at least 200 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

"The DMK had fought against the mighty combination of [former chief ministers] Kamaraj and Rajagopalachari in 1971. In that the elections, DMK won an unprecedented number of 184 seats.

"Compared to that, the current elections is nothing," Karunanidhi said.

On the other hand, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalithaa, looking to retain power, declined to comment on the poll prospects of her party.

She told reporters after exercising her franchise in the Stella Maris College in Thousand Lights constituency: "I will not comment on the polls till the results are out. I am feeling fine".
