DMK turns to money power in Jaya's fortress
May 07, 2006 22:44 IST
Six Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam men were arrested at Kadamalaikundu near here for allegedly distributing money along with booth-slips in Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's Andipatti constituency on the eve of polling in Tamil Nadu.
As soon as the news about disbursement of money spread, tension prevailed in the area with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam workers gathering in large numbers. The AIADMK workers claimed to have caught the rival party men distributing money.
Police rushed to the spot and took the DMK men into custody and persuaded the AIADMK workers to disburse calmly.
Further investigation was on, police said.
Meanwhile the police staged a flag march in Tiruparankunram, Avaniapuram, Tirunagar and other sensitive areas in Madurai district.
Officials said all arrangements had been made for holding polls in 2,370 polling booths in Madurai district. A heavy police force had been deployed in all the sensitive booths as well as counting centres, they said.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, speaking to reporters at Sivaganga, alleged that AIADMK men were giving money to voters in the constituency and that workers of the Democratic Progressive Alliance were preventing the same.
He said he had lodged a complaint with the Pudukottai district collector and the chief electoral officer in this regard.
