Maintaining that merger with the Congress is not on his agenda now, rebel leader K Karunakaran on Monday said his Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran will play a decisive role after the assembly elections in Kerala as the situation could even lead to a hung assembly.

Going by the prevailing trend, neither the Congress-led United Democratic Front nor the Left Democratic Front was in a comfortable position and there could even be a hung Assembly enabling his party to play a decisive role, Karunakaran said.

Karunakaran said there was no truth in the repeated assertions of Congress leaders including central observer to the state (Veerappa Moily) that a post-election merger was part of the accord signed between the Congress and his party.

"We have not thought about dissolving the party. Any decision in the future will be taken only after detailed consultations with party functionaries and workers," he said.

Karunakaran said it was due to certain circumstances that the DIC-K forged an alliance with the UDF but the party had not become a partner of the coalition. "You can call us fellow travelers, if you want," he said.

He said his party wanted an alliance with the LDF thinking that it would help form a stable and dynamic government considering the political equations at the national level. But that possibility was scuttled by the CPI-M's central leadership, he said.
