Baramati, around 100 km southeast of Pune, needs no introduction. It has been made famous by Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar, former defence minister and thrice chief minister of Maharashtra.

A town of less than 500,000 people, Baramati is not only one of the most industrialised in the state, it is one of the most enlightened in terms of modern irrigation, agricultural techniques and educational facilities. Agriculture research institutes, colleges of engineering, information technology, biotechnology, they are all here. And one man has made it all possible -- in Baramati they call him 'Saheb.'
