"I am your son. I am your brother," Rahul Gandhi tells a roadside crowd he is working on in Amethi.

It's a hot day, and Rahul is sweating. But his victory is a foregone conclusion. Proof of it is in numbers who throng to see, touch and talk to him.

"He is just like Rajiv Gandhi," says PCO owner Rajnath Yadav whose family owes its existence to the largesse from the Gandhi family: former prime minister and Amethi's blue-eyed boy Rajiv Gandhi had allotted him a telephone booth which has kept them going. In gratitude Yadav is working day and night to ensure that Rahul wins by a huge margin.

For the people of Amethi, Rahul is his father's mirror image. Many people still break down when you talk to them about Rajiv Gandhi, his assassination fresh in their minds 13 years later.

Rahul says it is this love from the people of Amethi that made him contest. "They are the finest people I have seen in India," he says as he gets down for a cuppa in the roadside tea stall.

Like his father, Rahul too keeps a punishing schedule, addressing close to 20 roadside meetings every day. But Rahul never asks anyone to vote for him. "I know they can only vote for me," he grins.

Amethi is just the beginning of a new political journey for the scion of India's most celebrated political family.

But will the Congress resurgence, evident in Amethi, be replicated across the country in this election?

"Just wait and see," he says calmly, as the white Toyota Qualis he travels in speeds away.
