Helicopters to drop polling staff, material at 46 booths in Doda

Election 2002 Helicopters will drop polling staff and material at 46 stations in remote and inaccessible areas of Doda district, where six assembly segments go to the polls in the fourth and final phase on October 8 of the Jammu & Kashmir assembly election.

This was decided at a high-level meeting of state officers with the Election Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh at the district headquarters in Doda on Friday, official sources said in Jammu.

Of the 534 polling stations in the hilly district, 243 are categorised as hypersensitive and the remaining 291 as sensitive. Forty-six booths are situated in remote and inaccessible areas. The district has six assembly constituencies.

The meeting also reviewed the security arrangements for the district. It was decided that every polling station would be provided wireless sets for better communication.

Others who attended the meeting were Election Commissioners T S Krishnamurthy and B B Tandon, Chief Secretary I S Malhi, and Director General of Police A K Suri.

Earlier, the Election Commission team arrived from Delhi and flew to Doda in a helicopter accompanied by the state officers.

The commission was also scheduled to review the poll arrangements for the third phase at a meeting in Jammu on Friday evening.

The districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kathua, and Udhampur will go to the polls on October 1 for the third phase to elect 27 representatives to the state assembly.
