Ghulam Nabi Azad, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee and general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, has demanded repolling in eight of the ten constituencies in Srinagar, which polled less then 10 per cent in the second phase of the assembly election in the state.
The constituencies are Hazratbal, Zadibal, Eidgah, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Amirakadal, Sonwar and Batmaloo.
Azad alleged that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah had engineered low polling in these constituencies to 'help' the National Conference.
He accused the state government of engineering the so-called terrorist attack in Srinagar in which two alleged militants had taken three policemen hostage.
"I wonder why did the security forces allow an OB van of a television network to telecast live the rescue operations on the morning of the second round of polling. Perhaps Dr Abdullah did not want higher turn out of voters in the second round, as it would go against his party," he asked.
He expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the polling was conducted in Jammu region, but claimed that the National Conference activists in Marh, Vijaypur and Samba constituencies beat up the Congress workers.
He, however, refused to demand repolling in any of the constituencies in Jammu region despite levelling allegations of rigging against the ruling party.
