outfit claims responsibility

Election 2002

Security forces early on Tuesday rescued three policemen who had been taken hostage on Monday evening by militants trapped inside a house at Gogji Bagh in uptown Srinagar.

Director General of Police A K Suri said that one batch of security personnel engaged the militants from one side of the house while another forced its entry from the other side and rescued the three cops.

One militant was killed in the exchange of fire between the militants and security forces while one more is suspected to be holed up inside the house, Suri said.

A nearby resident, reached by telephone, said that he could see the house in flames.

In another development, an official spokesman in Srinagar announced that the two polling booths located near the spot have already been shifted to the nearby Amar Singh college.

PTI adds:
The pro-Pakistan Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM) on Tuesday claimed that four of its activists, including two Pakistanis, were involved in the Gogji Bagh incident.

The militants were Munir Ahmad, Mohammad Ashraf and their Pakistani associates Wajahat-ullah and Ibrahim, a spokesman of the JuM told NAFA, a Srinagar-based news agency.

The militants were preparing to carry out a suicide attack on a CRPF camp but were detected by a police party before they could undertake their task, the spokesman said.

He said the four militants had been in contact with the outfit till 2300 hours IST on Monday night.
