Security forces on Sunday shot dead a militant almost 14 hours after he barged into a police housing complex in Srinagar.
Though no militant outfit has claimed responsibility, Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Tayiba is suspected to be behind the attack in which one policeman was killed and six others injured.
The killed militant was wearing police uniform and carried a fake identity card which stated him to be a resident of Darbhanga in Bihar.
The attack came just two days before voting takes place in the second round of assembly election in the state on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah described the attack as a desperate attempt by Pakistan to disrupt the election.
Speaking to rediff.com in Jammu after addressing a public rally in Gandhi Nagar, the chief minister said: "President Musharraf has been threatening to disrupt the election in Jammu and Kashmir by sending in terrorists. The fidayeen attack on the Bemina police colony on Saturday night is a glaring example of his dangerous designs. He is frustrated because the people of Jammu and Kashmir voted in large numbers in the first round of polling."
