People will reject National Conference: Chamanlal Gupta

Election 2002

Onkar Singh in Jammu

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Minister of State for Defence Chamanlal Gupta on Sunday expressed the confidence that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would reject the National Conference in the ongoing assembly election in the state.

He made this claim at a press conference in Jammu.

"I have toured the state and have felt the pulse of the voters. The voters in the [Kashmir] valley are dejected with the National Conference," he said.

He called upon the Dogra community of Jammu to rise above party lines and punish the National Conference for the derogatory remarks made by its chief Omar Abdullah against the former ruler of the state, Maharaja Hari Singh.

Gupta criticised Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah for using the state machinery for propaganda purposes. "Even the information officers are being used for election purposes," he alleged.

When asked if he would be the party's choice for the chief minister's post if the BJP won the election, Gupta said: "I hope someone from Jammu would become the chief minister...I am not in the race [for the chief ministership]."
