Onkar Singh in Jammu
Union Health Minister Shatrughan Sinha on Saturday congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for turning out in large numbers to vote in the first phase of election in the state.
Speaking to rediff.com after addressing political rallies in east Jammu and Gandhinagar, Sinha said he had no doubt that the subsequent rounds of polling would see a better voter turnout.
Criticising the Congress and the National Conference for doing nothing for the state, Sinha said: "When elections come they beg you for votes and promise you the moon. The National Conference has discriminated against Jammu region. A large chunk of new health and health education facilities created in the past decade or have all gone to the Valley," he said.
Asked about the demand from certain quarters for trifurcation of the state, Sinha said the demand is linked to the sentiments of the people of Jammu. He said those at the helm of affairs in the state must probe the genesis of this demand.
Earlier, addressing two public meetings in the city, an off-colour Sinha said he was not well and had come to campaign against the advice of his doctors.
"I had made a promise and I have come here to redeem that promise," he said.
