J&K govt to probe allegations
of coercion of voters

Basharat Peer in Srinagar

Election 2002

The Jammu and Kashmir government is inquiring into allegations of coercion of voters by security forces in certain villages of Kupwara district in the first phase of polling on September 16.

"We have sought a report from the deputy commissioner, Kupwara, on allegations that residents of Nutnusu and Trusoo villages in Handwara constituency were forced to vote," Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Pervez Dewan told rediff.com.

He said that only about 50 per cent polling had been recorded in these two villages and, prima facie, there does not seem to be a case of coercion. The government had decided to investigate these cases as they had received wide coverage in the media, he added.

State government sources, however, said that a preliminary report has already been received while the report of a formal inquiry is expected within three days.
