Sonia, Mufti to thrash out J&K chief ministership issue on Saturday

Election 2002

People's Democratic Party president Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will thrash out the issue of Jammu and Kashmir chief ministership in the proposed PDP-Congress coalition government on Saturday.

This was decided after Sayeed and PDP vice-presidents Mehbooba Mufti and Muzaffar Baig met senior Congress leaders Arjun Singh and Dr Manmohan Singh at the latter's New Delhi residence on Friday evening.

"We met Mufti sahib and Mehboobaji to discuss the [proposed J K government's] Common Minimum Programme. The discussion is still to conclude but we have covered a lot of ground," Arjun Singh said.

None of the PDP leaders offered any comment.

"Obviously I cannot discuss what we have covered as it is yet to conclude. It [conclusion] will depend on our discussion tomorrow," Singh said.

Asked why the CMP was being discussed when the vital issue of chief ministership remained unresolved, Singh said, "If the reverse was done, it would be like putting the cart before the horse."

"The thrust of the CMP is to implement in the very real sense the mandate that has been given by the people of J&K," he added.
