Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Wednesday indicated that a Congress-led minority government could come to power in Jammu and Kashmir soon.
Talking to reporters on board a special Indian Air Force aircraft on its way from Ahmedabad to Delhi, Advani said a party "reasonably near majority" could be invited to form the next government in the state.
He, however made it clear that that it would be the governor's decision.
Governor's rule was imposed in J&K on the midnight of October 17 after talks between the Congress and People's Democratic Party on the formation of a coalition government failed.
While the bone of contention between the two was the chief minister's post, there were disagreements over a common minimum programme too.
On Wednesday the Congress decided to go ahead and stake its claim before the governor, but was persuaded by the PDP to wait till Friday.
PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed will now fly down to Delhi on Friday for a last-ditch effort to sew up a coalition.
