'J&K governor unlikely to allow
Congress-led minority government'

Election 2002 Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena is unlikely to allow the Congress to lead a minority government in the state, a home ministry official told rediff.com on Wednesday.

When J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Nabi Azad met the governor in Srinagar, the former had indicated that many independents were willing to support his party, he said.

However, since the Congress and the People's Democratic Party are still testing each other's nerves on the issue of chief ministership, the governor is not impressed by their claims that they can form the government with the help of independents, he said.

"Governor's rule is there in J&K. Therefore no government can be cobbled up in haste," he said.

On Tuesday, Congress leader Dr Manmohan Singh indicated that his party has taken a decision on the issue. However, it is up to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to announce the decision, he said.
