People's Democratic Party vice-president Mehbooba Mufti rang up Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday and expressed a desire to hold another round of talks on the issue of government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Following this, Congress Working Committee members met in New Delhi and authorised Gandhi to hold talks with PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed.
"Congress president Sonia Gandhi has invited Mufti saheb for further discussions and he would be meeting her day after tomorrow [Friday]," Congress leader Manmohan Singh said after the meeting.
The PDP vice-president had called Gandhi "expressing a desire to open channels of communications on various proposals", he said.
On Tuesday, the CWC had taken a decision in this regard, but left it to the party president to make a formal announcement.
The message was clear: the Congress would stake claim to form government by Thursday.
Consequently, the PDP also convened a meeting of its political affairs committee at 1000 IST on Wednesday in Srinagar and decided that the channels of discussions with the Congress should not be closed.
