Onkar Singh in New Delhi
The political affairs committee of the People's Democratic Party will meet at 10 am on Wednesday in Srinagar to take a final decision on its talks with the Congress on the formation of a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to rediff.com from her residence, PDP vice-president Mehbooba Mufti said the PAC would be briefed by party president Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on his deliberations with the Congress over the past week or so.
The PDP-Congress talks have been stuck over the issue of whose chief minister it would be if the two join hands to form the next government in Srinagar.
On Tuesday, the Congress said it had made up its mind on the next step it was going to take in Srinagar and the same would be made public at an appropriate time by party chief Sonia Gandhi.
Mehbooba told newsmen on Tuesday morning that there was no question of her party accepting the deputy chief minister's post in the coalition -- an offer made by the Congress.
She had asserted that the party would rather sit in the opposition then accept a Congress-led coalition in the state.
Meanwhile, senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig said it would be "unfortunate" if the two parties fail to form a coalition government in the state.
He said the voters' mandate was clearly for a Congress-PDP government. "I wonder how they (the Congress) will manage to run a minority government."
