NC has not ruled out staking claim to
form government in J&K: G M Shah

Election 2002 In a significant development, the National Conference on Monday said it has not ruled out staking claim to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir.

With 29 seats, it is the single largest party in the 87-member House.

"Constitutionally, it is the duty of the governor to ask the single largest party to form the government," senior leader Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Shah told reporters after a 90-minute meeting of the working committee of the party in Srinagar to take stock of the situation after its debacle in the assembly elections.

This stand is in stark contrast with the statements made by outgoing chief minister Farooq Abdullah and NC president Omar Abdullah who had conceded defeat and had said they would not stake claim to form government.

The party's tally rose by one after a victorious rebel candidate, Shahjahan Dar, rejoined the party.
