Efforts to resolve the wrangle over the chief minister's post gathered added impetus after it emerged that the National Conference had reportedly made overtures to some parties and independents in a bid to form the next government.
Sources in Srinagar said that a group within the NC, which has only 28 seats in the new assembly, has reportedly mounted pressure on the leadership to seek the 'support of various parties and independents to retain power in the state' and simultaneously make efforts to strengthen the party.
These sources said that the NC had contacted some independents in Jammu and Srinagar.
In this context, Thursday's meeting between senior PDP leader and Baramulla MLA Muzaffar Hussain Beg with Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah assumes significance.
It had been reported that a high level Congress delegation would visit Srinagar and hold talks with the PDP leadership to decide who would head the alliance.
However, the plan was apparently changed and PDP vice-president Mehbooba Mufti told rediff.com that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had requested PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed to meet her in Delhi.
"The people of Jammu and Kashmir have voted for a change. The PDP and the Congress have no choice but to jointly form the government," she said.
