Chief ministership is not a problem: Mufti

Election 2002

Peoples Democratic Party president Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Saturday said the issue of chief ministership would not be an hindrance in his party joining hands with the Congress to form a new government in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to reporters on his arrival in New Delhi for a meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, the Mufti said his discussions with the Congress chief would revolve around "a common minimum programme" for the new government.

As far as the chief ministership is concerned, the PDP chief said it would be a decision taken by consultation between his party, the Congress and other smaller groups that will be part of the new government.

The Congress-PDP combine has 36 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly -- eight short of the halfway mark of 44.

"The first priority is make sure that the National Conference does not return to power. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have given a verdict that is anti-National Conference. This verdict must be honoured," he said.
