J&K polls a triumph for Indian democracy: Advani

Election 2002 Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Friday said the results of the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir were a triumph for Indian democracy.

"Though my party [the Bharatiya Janata Party] did not win them, it does not matter who won or lost. The fact is that India has won and democracy has triumphed in these elections in the face of heightened terrorist violence," he said.

Advani was speaking at a function in New Delhi to launch the yearlong birth centenary celebrations of Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan.

He said the main theme of discussions on the J&K polls this time was how much polling took place despite the terrorist attacks.

Advani said JP had a "definite idea" about the Kashmir problem and "we are happy to see those ideas being put to practice" through the elections in J&K.

Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who earlier inaugurated a photo-exhibition on JP's life and times, released commemorative coins of Rs 100, Rs 10 and Re 1 on the occasion.
