Farooq Abdullah quits as J&K chief minister

Election 2002

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Friday resigned from his post in the wake of National Conference's stunning defeat in the state assembly election.

Abdullah submitted his resignation to Governor G C Saxena after the Cabinet met in the morning at his residence in Srinagar.

Talking to reporters before submitting his resignation, Abdullah wished the new government all success, saying it should tackle the menace of terrorism on top priority.

The National Conference was often accused of promoting terrorism, Abdullah said, adding 'now, I will like to see what the new government will do'.

The outgoing chief minister said his party would play the role of a healthy opposition in the state assembly.

Asked whether the National Conference, which emerged as the single largest party, would explore options to form government, Abdullah said "The mandate of the people has to be honoured and we will do it."

He, however, added, "I know who is responsible for our defeat. All those will stand exposed in the time to come."
