Assaulted J&K minister to move human rights panel

Election 2002

Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Food and Supply Bashir Ahmed Nengroo, who was allegedly beaten up by an army captain on October 7, plans to move the National Human Rights Commission.

He was allegedly assaulted while on his way to Pulwama, from Srinagar.

Speaking to rediff.com Nengroo said he was planning to slap a compensation suit against the army officer and seek exemplary damages.

"Though senior army officers have come and apologised to me but, I do not think it is enough. I need to make an example out of this army Captain [T Jamir] who dared to attack me along with three of his men," Nengroo said.

Narrating the sequence of events, Nengroo said, "My escort vehicle had for some reason gone ahead of me and I was trying to cross the army area near Panthachowk, when Captain Jamir came out and started abusing Kashmiris and said ministers like me were hand-in-glove with the militants."

"He had almost throttled me when I managed to free myself from his clutches. Enraged by this he took out his pistol and broke two of my tooth," he added.

"When Manzoor Ahmed, a businessman, tried to intervene even he was beaten badly by the captain and his three accomplices," he alleged.

Nengroo has brought the incident to the notice of Abdul Ahmad Wakil, speaker of Jammu and Kashmir assembly, who has promised prompt action.

The army has already ordered an inquiry into the incident. Senior officers, however, were not available for comment when reached on phone.
