Acting chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Javed Ahmad Mir was on Tuesday detained along with four other party activists as police scuttled a plan by the Hurriyat Conference to stage an anti-poll demonstration in Srinagar, official sources said
Mir and four other senior party activists were picked up by the police from their houses in different parts of the city late on Monday night, the sources said.
Besides Mir, those detained at various police stations were Mohammad Saleem Nanaji, Mohammad Sidiq Shah and Bashir Ahmad and Shabir Ahmad Khan.
Police also raided the Rajbagh office of the Islamic Students League and the Muslim League, both constituents of the 23-party Hurriyat Conference, around midnight. However, no one was arrested during the raids, the sources said.
The JKLF, a constituent of the Hurriyat, had planned to stage a demonstration outside its headquarters at Maisuma in the heart of Srinagar against holding of assembly elections, the fourth and final phase of which was held on Tuesday.
