Polling for final phase of J&K
assembly election begins

Election 2002

Despite threats by militant outfits and a boycott call by separatists, polling began on Tuesday for the fourth and final phase of election in Jammu and Kashmir.

The last phase covers six assembly constituencies in Doda district. Voting will also take place in Lolab constituency of Kupwara district, where polling was originally scheduled in the first round on September 16 but was postponed following the assassination of Law Minister and National Conference candidate Mushtaq Ahmed Lone on September 11.

An estimated 4.84 lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise to choose their representatives from among 56 candidates, including Minister of State for Home Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardy, Bharatiya Janata Party state unit chief Daya Kishan Kotwal and Bahujan Samaj Party state unit chief Sheikh Abdul Rehman.
