People will be masters of destiny in
J&K: Mufti

Election 2002 Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on Monday blamed the previous regime headed by Farooq Abdullah for the ills of the state.

"The ills of the prevailing situation lies in the autocratic pattern of governance of the previous government. Under the new dispensation, the people will be masters of their destiny," the Mufti said at a rally in Jammu.

Promising to address the root cause of people's disenchantment and evolve a mechanism for grievance redressal, he hinted at bringing an accountability bill that could bring in its purview persons holding high public offices.

The chief minister said all the three regions of the state have to flourish together.

Jammu region, which has not played its due role since 1947, will now be required to play one. The time has come when its legitimate aspirations are fulfilled, he said.

The Mufti said no region must feel that it is being ignored, as the coalition government is determined to provide equal opportunities to all.

Referring to the appointment of the deputy chief minister from Jammu, he said the move would go a long way in satiating the urges of the people.

"The new alliance government is committed to bring peace and development by launching a common minimum programme," he said, adding the people have given a historic verdict by discarding the National Conference.

Stressing that the bureaucracy has to perform and ensure accountability at all levels, the Mufti said his government will not victimise anyone, but if any wrong is committed it would be rectified.

"Some short term measures will be taken to provide the much-needed respite to the people who have undergone a most difficult phase," he said.

An economic package is needed, as the state cannot wait for accomplishment of long-term projects, he said.

The Mufti reiterated that dialogue and not gun is the solution to the problems of the state.

The chief minister praised the people of Jammu for demonstrating "exemplary restraint at crucial times" and hoped that the dark era would give way to a bright future.

Extending his Diwali greetings, he said he has decided to spend the auspicious occasion with the people of Jammu. "Let this festival bring happiness to all."
