EC declares NC candidate winner in Jammu LS bypoll

Election 2002

Chowdhary Talib Hussain of National Conference was declared the winner in the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat by more than 55,000 votes.

The decision to declare Hussain the winner came about after the Election Commission on Wednesday concluded that there was 'no cause for it to interfere in the announcement of the result'.

"The EC looked at the records of the February 21 by-election and concluded that there was no compelling reason for the commission to interfere,'' a commission spokesman said.

Accordingly, the returning officer of the Jammu Parliamentary constituency was allowed to declare the result.

The commission went into the by-election records after various opposition parties, including the Congress and the BJP, complained of electoral malpractices.

The ruling National Conference wrests the Jammu seat from the BJP.

Earlier, Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah accused the BJP of spreading canards against his party.

"BJP is the enemy of the nation," Chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah said, while lambasting the state unit of the BJP for levelling serious charges of rigging in the Jammu parliamentary bypoll.

"I have never seen any party as my enemy, but BJP is the enemy of the nation," Dr Abdullah said.
