Jayalalithaa was on Sunday unanimously elected leader of the AIADMK legislature party following her landslide victory in Andipatti paving the way for her taking over as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
At the legislature party meeting held at the party headquarters, her name was proposed by Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and seconded by all those present.
Jayalalithaa, who is the party general secretary, was not present at the meeting. She won the bypoll by a margin of 41,201 votes.
Asked about her absence at the meeting, Panneerselvam said, "There is no need for it as I am still the leader of the AIADMK legislature party."
"Whatever she offers, I will accept," he said, when asked about the post he might occupy after Jayalalithaa became the chief minister.
Panneerselvam said he would meet Governor P S Ramamohan Rao on Sunday evening to submit his ministry's resignation.
