Polling begins amidst tight security for Gujarat by-polls

Election 2002

Voting for the by-polls to three assembly constituencies in Gujarat, including Rajkot-II, from where Chief Minister Narendra Modi is contesting, began amidst tight security on Thursday morning.

Polling for other two constituencies -- Sayajiganj and Mahuva (ST) -- also began on a peaceful note, officials said.

Over 7.04 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes in all the three assembly constituencies to decide the fate of 38 candidates.

The Election Commission has declared 151 of the total 191 polling booths as sensitive in Rajkot-II, while in Sayajiganj in Vadodara district over 207 of the total 382 polling booths have been declared sensitive.

In Mahuva (ST), 71 of the total 188 polling booths have been declared sensitive.
