Tense Andipatti goes to poll amidst tight security

Election 2002

Polling began in the by-election constituency of Andipatti, from where Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalithaa hopes to re-enter the Tamil Nadu state assembly, Thursday morning amidst tight security arrangements.

A little over 209,000 voters are eligible to vote in the bypoll, necessitated following the resignation of AIADMK MLA Thanga Tamizhselvan.

Over 3,300 policemen, including 13 companies from the Central Reserve Police Force, have been deployed at the 216 polling stations in the constituency, many of which are categorised as sensitive.

Though there are 24 candidates seeking their electoral fortune, the main contest is between Jayalalithaa and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Vaigai Sekar.
