Miscreants fire at RKD candidate in Gopalpur

Election 2002

R Swaminathan in Varanasi

Miscreants fired at the Rashtriya Krantikari Dal candidate in Gopalpur constituency of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Hari Shankar urf Jinkho Singh, when he was addressing a meeting on Sunday evening.

Police sources said the attack, which took place under the Maharajganj village police station, was carried out at around 1600 IST.

Six or eight men arrived at the venue in a couple of Tata Sumos and started firing indiscriminately.

One person identified as Rajesh suffered three bullet injuries. He was declared dead when he was brought to hospital.

Jinkho Singh suffered a minor injury in the arm. Speaking to rediff.com, the RKD candidate alleged that the attack was carried out by Samajwadi Party workers who meant to kill him. He also said the police had failed to give him protection even after he had indicated to them in writing about the threats he was facing.

Another person, Vijay, who suffered serious injuries, was referred to the Benaras Hindu University hospital.
