Govt planning to modernise madrassas: Joshi

Union Minister for Human Resources Murli Manohar Joshi on Wednesday said the Centre was planning to modernise madrassas in a bid to bring them into the mainstream.

"About 1,000 madrassas were being given grants by the Centre," Joshi told reporters in Kanpur in the midst of campaigning for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

He said the Union government had increased the budgetary provision for development of Urdu from Rs 20 million to Rs 200 million.

The government is planning to modernise madrassas to include the teaching of science and was granting them funds based on recommendations by the concerned state government, the minister said.

He flayed political parties opposing changes in 'some text books providing misleading information to the students'.
