EC knits a web of election informationThe Election Commission has completed installation of a latest information technology tool for the conduct of the ongoing general elections. This tool would enable the commission to remain in touch with its 32 chief electoral officers and the returning officers of all the parliamentary constituencies. Briefing media persons on the website installed at the Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner Subas Pani said it comprised three main components. The first part covers basic information on the electoral system in the country, the election commission of India, questions expected to be asked frequently on the electoral system and elections, press releases and key statistics. The second part covers the entire range of electoral laws, manuals, handbooks, instructions and directives. Most of these are textual matter and covers more than 10,000 pages of printed material and include all the publications on the commission in print, he added. The third part of this tool contains comprehensive data on electors, polling stations, political parties, poll schedules, number of candidates, counting trends and results. The last part covering progress of counting of votes and declaration of results will be ''dynamically updated.'' on every round of counting for each segment in a parliamentary and assembly constituency, Pani said. During the Lok Sabha poll, more than 1,000 pages will be refreshed with the latest data every five minute or so. Maps, including party position for each state, will also be dynamically updated and placed on the website. The entire infrastructure for the website is located at the Nirvachan Sadan, headquarters of the Election Commission of India. The site has been developed and is being maintained by CMC Ltd, Pani said. UNI
