EC hopes militant strike will not affect J&K polls

The Election Commission today said it is in touch with senior police and election officers in Jammu and Kashmir about today's militant strike at Handwara and was hopeful that it will not disrupt tomorrow's Lok Sabha polling.

Deputy election commissiner Subhas Pani said the returning officer was functioning from the ground floor of the building the first floor of which was taken over by militants in an early morning attack at Handwara in Kupwara district of north Kashmir. However, no poll-related official was present in the building at that time and the commission did not foresee any difficulty as far as the conduct of polls was concerned, he added.

Pani said the commission was in close touch with the chief electoral officer and state director general of police.

Two of the six Lok Sabha constituencies in Kashmir -- Srinagar and Ladakh -- are to go to the polls tomorrow while the other four would go to the polls on September 11 and 18.
