In 1957 this constituency returned Jawaharlal Nehru, and stuck with the Congress till the BLD stopped it in 1977. The next time the constituency went non-Congress was in 1991, when Shashi Prakash of the JD defeated the BJP. The latter made up in 1996, when Amrit Lal Bharti defeated the SP's Suresh Pasi by 29,000 votes. Shashi Prakash, who crossed over to the BSP, came third, took away almost 100,000 votes.
