Interestingly, the Congressman who won this seat back for Indira Gandhi in 1980, after the Janata Party had claimed it in the previous round, was Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna who, as the Lok Dal candidate in the next round, was defeated by Amitabh Bachhan in Allahabad. A Congress stronghold, this was won by the BJP's Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri in 1991 who lost to the Congress-T's Satpal Maharaj in 1996 by 15,000 votes.
