Till 1991 the last time D S A Sivaprakasam of the DMK won from here was in 1980. The next two elections he came second to the AIADMK's M R Janarthanam, and in 1991 his party fielded someone else. He returned to the seat in 1996, and trounced the AIADMK's A R Rajaselvam by 119,000 votes.
