The MP from here in 1952 and 1957 was the Congress's R Venkataraman. The party went the DMK/AIADMK way for a brief while before reverting to the Congress. In 1996, however, the DMK's S S Palanimanickam defeated sitting Congress MP Thulasiah Vandayar by 201,000 votes.
