The only time the Dravida parties have won from here were in 1962 and 1967, the seat staying with the Congress for most other time. In 1984 and 1989 P R S Venkatesan was elected on the Congress ticket. In 1991 as well, the constituency stayed with the Congress, P P Kaliaperumal being the MP. Venkatesan was once again in the fray in 1996, this time as the TMC candidate and he defeated the Congress's V Santhamurthy by 205,000 votes.
