In 1984 and 1989 L Balaraman (Congress) was the MP. In 1991 the constituency stayed with the Congress albeit it was a different MP. In 1996 Balaraman was once again in the fray, this time on the TMC ticket, and defeated sitting MP M Krishnaswamy by 174,000 votes.
