L M Singhvi was an Independent MP in 1962, before the Congress defeated him in the next election and he moved on to other things in life. State Congress chief Ashok Gehlot was elected in the 1980 and 1984 elections, but he was defeated by the BJP's Jaswant Singh in 1989. Gehlot wrested back the seat in 1991 from the BJP, and was re-elected in 1996 by 54,000 votes.
