Maharani Gayatri Devi represented this constituency in Parliament for three terms, in 1962 (with a world record margin), 1967 and 1971, on behalf of the Swatantra Party. Among others, this constituency in 1984 returned Nawal Kishore Sharma of the Congress. But since then, it has been Girdharilal Bhargava of the BJP for three consecutive terms. In 1996 he defeated the Congress's Pandit Dinesh Chandra Swami by 115,000 votes.
