Elections 98
Surjit Singh Barnala -- later Punjab's chief minister -- was elected in 1977; he was defeated in 1980 by the Congress. The next time he contested the election from here was in 1996, and ranged against him was Simranjit Singh Mann. Barnala won by 76,000 votes, while the sitting Congress MP, Gurcharan Singh Dadhahoor, came fourth, after the CPI-M, winning 18.97 % of the votes. |
