Krupasinghu Bhoi first won in 1980, on a Congress ticket, and increased his vote tally in the next election. He lost in 1989, won the seat back in 1991, and managed to retain the seat in 1996, defeating his JD rival Bijaya Singh Bariha by nearly 85,000 votes.
