Mrutyunjaya Nayak was the first Congressman to win this seat, in 1980. His party won the next round and lost in 1989, and in 1991 Nayak came back as MP, defeating his JD rival squarely. In the same line-up in 1996, he managed to hold on to the constituency, becoming the first MP from here to have been elected twice consecutively.
