Samarendra Kundu is the only non-Congress MP to have been elected from this constituency. In 1967 he was elected on the PSP ticket; in 1977 he was elected on the BLD ticket; and in 1989 he was elected on the JD ticket. The Congress won back the seat in 1991 and in 1996, and interestingly the runner-up in 1996 was an Independent candidate.
