Before 1984, the Congress lost this seat only once, in 1977 to the BLD. In 1989, the BJP managed to wrest the seat from it, before Prahlad Singh Patel lost to the Congress in 1991. In 1996, Patel got his revenge, routing the Congress candidate by 65,000 votes.
