It has been a rollercoaster ride for Chhaviram Argal, the BJP candidate who defeated the Congress in 1989. The next time round, in 1991, he lost to the Congress's Barelal Javat, and in 1996, in a contest with the BSP's Dr P P Choudhary, won back the seat. The Congress candidate could only manage 14.59 % of the vote.
