G G Swell won this seat for the Congress in 1984, only the second election from this state. In the next election he was out of the party, and lost to the Congress candidate, an outcome that was replayed in 1991 as well. Finally, in 1996, he won the seat as an Independent, defeating the Congress candidate D D Lapang by 80,000 votes.
