The PWP won from here in 1957, but it has been the Congress ever since. The BJP's Anna Dange came second in 1989, but that has been the saffron brigade's closest call so far. After P P Vasantrao won the seat four consecutive times till 1991, in the last election Congressman Madan Vishwanath Patil took over, defeating his nearest Independent rival by 175,000 votes.
